Step 2 of 7

Why Anything Exists

Sit with the biggest question there is.

Here is a question so large that most of us learn to walk past it: why is there anything at all. There did not have to be a universe. There did not have to be you. And yet here it all is, and here you are, reading these words with a mind able to ask why.

It is easy to rush to an answer, in either direction. Some hurry to say it all means nothing, others to say they already know exactly what it means. Both can be ways of avoiding the weight of the question itself. Before any answer, the question deserves to be felt. That you exist, that anything exists, is strange and enormous, and familiarity has dulled us to it.

I am not asking you to conclude anything yet. I am asking you to let the question be as big as it really is. People have looked into this their whole lives and come to believe there is Someone behind it all. I believe that too. But belief that means anything cannot be handed to you secondhand. It has to begin with you actually wondering, honestly, without rushing to be done.

Wonder is not weakness. It is the beginning of wisdom. The person who can still be amazed that anything exists is closer to the truth than the person who decided long ago it was not worth the thought.

One small action

A few minutes of genuine wondering

Find a few quiet minutes. Step outside if you can. Let yourself actually wonder at the fact that any of this exists at all, including you. Do not try to solve it. Just let the question be as large as it is, and notice what stirs in you.
