Most people think faith begins with certainty. They imagine you have to already believe, already feel something, already have it figured out before you are allowed to start. That is backward, and it keeps a lot of honest people standing outside a door they were welcome to walk through.
Faith begins with honesty. Not with pretending to be further along than you are, and not with forcing a feeling you do not have. It begins by telling the truth about where you actually stand right now. Maybe that is hope. Maybe it is doubt. Maybe it is a tired kind of wondering you have never said out loud. All of that is a real place to begin, and none of it disqualifies you.
There is something freeing in this. You do not have to clean yourself up first. You do not have to arrive with the right words. You only have to be honest, because honesty is the one thing faith cannot grow without. A faith built on pretending is built on sand. A faith built on the truth, even a small and uncertain truth, has something solid under it.
So before anything else, give yourself permission to be exactly where you are. That is not a weak start. It may be the only strong one there is.
